Fire Prevention Week kicks off Saturday and the Penfield Fire Company is honoring some students for their essays on fire safety.
Firefighters awarded the two winners with a special ride to school Thursday morning. The two students got to ride in the firetruck.
Fire safety and prevention are something firefighters promote every day, and this week firefighters are focusing on kitchen safety.
"Accidents can happen at any time, and they can be quite devastating, so if you always remember these things, then hopefully no one will get hurt," said Jeff Whithall of the Penfield Fire Department.
McQuaid 6th grader Paul Sims was one of the winners in Monroe County Fireman Associations Fireman Essay contest.
"I wrote about is to always have two ways out and a fire can happen at any moment so always be ready for it," said Sims.
The essay contest is held every year for middle schoolers.
