A teenager has died after being hit by a car while riding his bicycle Friday night in Greece.
"I talked to him on his cellphone and he was about to cross the road and I told him to be careful and cross at the cross light, and obviously he did not cross at the cross light," said Paula Murray, mother of the teen.
That was the last time Paula Murray spoke to her son. Chris Saunders, or 'CJ' as his family called him, was riding his bike across Latona Road onto West Ridge Road when he was hit by a car.
"I heard sirens go by after I got off the phone with him and I just had a gut feeling it was him," said Paula.
Robert Drake of Webster and his wife, a registered nurse, got out of their nearby car and gave Saunders CPR until the ambulance arrived.
"If she hadn't had performed CPR, his heart probably wouldn't have still been beating when I got there. It gave me an opportunity to hold his hand," said Christopher Saunders Sr., father.
Saunders died at the hospital shortly after 11 p.m. Friday. His parents say he was a typical teenager who enjoyed riding his bike around the neighborhood with his friends.
Chris' mother describes him as being "a risk taker, loved speed, go karts, motorcycles."
Chris enjoyed spending time with his siblings and was looking forward to getting his driver's permit in the spring.
"I felt that he looked up to me and I hope I was a good influence on him." said Ashley Murray, sister.
While devastated by the loss of their son, Saunders' parents were also concerned for the driver of the car.
"To the woman who accidentally hit him, I know it wasn't her fault and I don't blame her at all," said Paula.
Police say no charges have been filed against the driver.
CJ will be buried next to his grandmother at Riverside Cemetery.
The family has invited the public to attend calling hours Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at New Comer Funeral Home at 2636 Ridgeway Avenue.
A service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the First Bible Baptist Church at 990 Manitou Road in Hilton.
