The Blue Star Mothers of America opened a canteen at the Canandaigua VA Hospital on Sunday.
With the help of Home Depot stores in the area, the 135-year old house on hospital grounds got a makeover.
Blue Star Canteen is opening to active duty military members, veterans and their families and, of course, run by the moms.
"We decided to do this because we thought it would be good for the vets, especially those who are in treatment here to have a place to go to get away from the hospital and just be in a house, a home," said Joyce Mader, President of NY Chapter 1.
This is the first Blue Star Canteen in the country. The mothers were inspired by a canteen that was open during World War Two.
Vets can visit on their down time, watch TV, and even get a home cooked meal twice a week.
