A police situation involving an armed gunman who set his house on fire in Erie County is over.
Police and firefighters were called to the scene on Fries Road in the Town of Tonawanda just after 9 a.m.
Tonawanda police say a man named Joseph Hollywood threatened to kill a woman with a gun and then set the home on fire. Police also say they heard gunshots believed to have come from inside the home.
Some residents in the area were evacuated and others within a quarter mile radius were asked to go into their basements during the incident. As a precaution, National Grid cut power to the area.
Police say the West Webster incident was on their minds as they were dealing with the situation.
"The house continued to burn but due to the nature of an unknown shooter the location being unknown, we didn't want firefighters approaching the home due to the fact that they were putting themselves at risk, of gunfire, obviously we all recall the Webster incident near Rochester," said Lt. Nick Bado of the Tonawanda Police Dept.
Police believe Hollywood's body is inside the burned out home. Residents were allowed to go back to the neighborhood and their homes.
No one else was injured.
