TOWN OF TONAWANDA, N.Y. — Town of Tonawanda Police said the armed man who started his home on fire Monday morning was ready to engage with police.
Joseph Hollywood, 60, was not going to go down without a fight.
Police say Hollywood's body was found in a corner of the basement of his Fries Road home, where he was lying on the floor with an oxygen tank and a long gun. Investigators believe Hollywood was there to react to any police that came looking for him.
An autopsy completed this morning showed he died from smoke inhalation and not a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Officers responded to the home Monday morning after a woman called 911 saying Hollywood threatened to kill her and had set the house on fire. Neighbors were evacuated or forced to their basements, and nearby schools were locked down during the incident.
Police were back at the scene Tuesday, will recover any weapons that need to be properly disposed of, and will wrap up the investigation.
While there isn't much left of the home, police say the process is underway to have an emergency demolition of what remains.
