Due to large financial losses, Excellus BlueCross BlueShield announced that it's withdrawing from the Medicaid Managed Care and Family Health Plus Programs.
In Monroe County, more than 72,000 people will have to change insurers and may or may not be able to keep their doctor depending on whether the provider participates with another health plan.
An Excellus spokesman said the company has lost almost $100 million this year. It's expecting an even bigger loss if it continued.
The change will take effect in the first quarter of 2014.
Spokesman Jim Redmond responded to the move, saying:
"Our preference would be to stay in the Medicaid Managed Care and Family Health Plus programs. We have a long history of supporting safety net programs but we cannot continue to do so while incurring such large financial losses.
We have had several meetings with the State throughout 2013 to see if the losses could be addressed by changes in reimbursements that the State pays us to provide coverage."
The decision will not affect Child Health Plus or Medicare products.
