The memories of fallen Monroe County Sheriff's deputies will live on through a dedication effort by the Badge of Honor Society. Two new signs were dedicated Thursday.
Sergeant Peter Rotolo was killed in the line of duty in 1974. Corporal Catherine Crawford was killed in 1995.
The ceremony at the Monroe County Jail had special meaning, as both officers were killed as a result of inmate fights at the jail.
"Nearly 150 officers are killed in the line of duty every year," said Sheriff Patrick O'Flynn, R-Monroe County. "That equates to one officer every two and a half days in the United States. While we can't bring back these loved ones, we hope that this dedication brings the friends and family some comfort. The ceremony is a testament to our appreciation for their service to our community."
The Badge of Honor Society has placed commemorative signs honoring fallen officers in Rochester, Buffalo and Syracuse.
