Pet Pointers: Sunshine horses

They're big, they're beautiful and were domesticated thousands of years ago to help humans farm, travel and fight wars. But these days you are more likely to find them in show rings or family farms.
It's not uncommon for horses to be traded or sold and even given up for adoption due to unfortunate circumstances. Sunshine Horses Inc is an organization that takes in horses that have nowhere else to go while volunteers, who want to learn about horses, care for them until a permanent home can be found.
"The mission of sunshine is really to serve as a transition area for horses that are coming off a career as a harness race horse or as a thoroughbred race horse or even as someone whose owner can't really take care of them right now and make them into a pleasure horse that someone is going to be able to give a second career to," said Sarah Vecchi.
The not-for-profit sanctuary has found homes for more than 75 horses since it started in 2001 and is always looking for volunteers who don't mind a little hard work and know how to handle a shovel.
"We have a lot of volunteers that run the gamut of experience and knowledge of horses. We have people that come and clean stalls and groom. We have people that set up fundraisers. We have people that come and brush a horse and others that will get them started under saddle so they can be adopted into a great home. So we have a lot of great people helping but we can always use more," Vecchi said.
