Light Bulb Finder
Apps that help people understand or protect the environment, that's what the Environmental Protection Agency was asking for when it started it's Apps for the Environment contest. Recently, after nearly 40 apps were submitted, the agency announced it had chosen two winners -- one best overall, one best student. The best overall, Light Bulb Finder. Just as the name indicates it helps you find new light bulbs, only ones that are more energy efficient than what you use now. You click through to indicate what you're using now -- the size, shape, watts, what kind of fixture it's in. After the final step you are then given a new type of bulb to purchase with information on how much money it'll likely save you and how much it'll also save the environment. Developers say it'll cut the average, annual electricity bill by more than $120 and cut CO2 impact by 1,360 lbs. Light Bulb Finder is a free app for iOS and Android devices.
EarthFriend
The best student app is EarthFriend by some young environmentalists from North Carolina. The app has tools aimed at helping any age user understand better what's happening with climate, water pollution, air pollution, and land pollution. For adults, there are links to all sorts of information including local data. For kids, each section has a little game designed to teach something about the environment. There's also a "What Can You Do" tab with suggestions on how you can do your part. EarthFriend is a free iOS app.
