Nintendo's nationwide Wii Games Summer 2010 competition kicked off this past week with an opening ceremony at New Jersey's Liberty State Park.

"At these events you'll have teams. So there will be different types of teams made up of two or four people. And we've got it separated into adults, adults and teen, adult and child, a family category, super adults for 55 and over they'll play each of the different games in the competition and then get a score out of all of those," said David Young of Nintendo.

The top scorers are invited to a grand final in Los Angeles on Labor Day weekend for bragging rights and a chance to win a bunch of home entertainment type prizes. The competition is made up mostly of mini-games from Wii Fit and Wii Sports Resort.

While some claim to be in it to win it, others are just happy to be indoors, in air conditioning, playing video games on yet another sweltering summer day.

"I think I'm pretty good but I probably won't win anything major but I'm okay with that. Just here to have a good time," said one participant.

"I wasn't coordinated like the kids. The kids are fantastic, they're good," said another.

Olympic gold medal gymnast Shawn Johnson says she agreed to sign on as the official ambassador of the event because she likes that the Wii can make you sweat even while indoors, in the air conditioning on a sweltering summer day.

"Wii has gone in an amazing direction with Wii Fit getting people up off the couch getting them active, playing sports and it is a good alternative on a hot day especially when they can't be outside they can go inside play around and not just sit on the couch," Johnson said.
