Hamlin History Emerges From the Undergrowth Part 2
In PART ONE Ed Evans explained the history of Hamlin’s Civilian Conservation Corp. After the great depression the CCC camp was established just south of Hamlin Beach State Park to house the men who would build that park. The camp had two more lives before being shut down; a migrant workers camp, and a World War II prisoner of war camp.

Continuing this story, Evans explains why he dedicated a year and a half of his life to uncover the camp and collect artifacts. Evans hopes the site may have another life as a CCC education center. He adds any effort to preserve any history has to happen as soon as possible.
Many of the old pictures seen in this report were compiled by Hamlin Historian Mary Smith. Her book, "Remembering Hamlin" further explores the history of the CCC camp and can be found at the Hamlin Town Clerks office.
