When Bruce Fernandez discovered that he couldn't possibly afford to buy an antique carousel horse, he decided to build one. Over time, he got so good at it, he began restoring horses from all over the country. If that weren't enough, he'll teach you to do it too.
"I teach this because I'm interested in continuing the art of carousel carving. It's becoming a lost art. There's not that many people doing it, and hopefully one or two of the people that I teach will go on and be better than I am and maybe create a whole carousel," Fernandez says.
"My students have grown up with them. Their kids have grown up with them. It's always a fun time. It's something you remember. The nostalgia just lingers. I want them to walk away thinking they've achieved something spectacular, because it's a memory and a lot of people carry those memories on. I know my carvers do."
