Its a salad!

Its a salad!
We just harvested our first tomato, green bean, and carrot this afternoon and created a salad. It was delicious! I hit up the staff around the station to try the fresh veggies. Some were more open to the idea of tasting fresh veggies tasting than others. Some of us YNNers were even daring enough to try the freshly picked cayenne pepper! It has been about 20 minutes and my mouth is still burning, but the flavor was outstanding.

Although the garden has had some rough days over the past few weeks, it was refreshing to get to taste the fresh veggies. I’ve learned that growing a container garden has many different challenges to it than a traditional garden. The plants need frequent waterings since there’s not as much soil around them to hold the water. The heat really packs into the bricks during the day. This got our seeds off to a good start in May acting as an incubator. Now I’m concerned that the heat may be too much for the cucumber plant whose vines are laying on the bricks. I’m tempted to try to steak the cucumber with a tomato cage. Has anyone ever tried this?

Although it was an exciting day to have some fresh veggies to share, it was too bad that Jules wasn’t around to get his fresh tomato sandwich. Sorry Jules! But the tomato just wasn’t going to make it until you got back. Hopefully we’ll see another tomato in the next few weeks.

As always, we’d love to see photos of your garden. If you’d like to share your photos email them to YNNwebteam@gmail.com. Thank you to those who have shared their photos this summer. I’ve placed a gallery with some of them below.
