Special committee recommends state senator is expelled

ALBANY, N.Y. -- New York State Senator Hiram Monserrate is a step closer to being bounced out of office.

The senate committee that investigated the Queens democrat after his misdemeanor assault, recommended that the full senate vote on whether to expel or censure him “as soon as possible.”

In a report issued Thursday, the committee said Monserrate failed to cooperate or appear at hearings and showed little remorse in recent interviews.

Western New York Republican Senator Cathy Young was on the special committee and released this statement on the recommendation: “Our select committee has conducted a thorough, deliberative review and the conclusion is clear. Domestic violence cannot be tolerated, and it is reprehensible that Senator Monserrate refused to cooperate with the committee. He needs to go."

Monserrate has said he will not give up his job even if he is expelled.
