NEW YORK -- Senator Hiram Monserrate's political future remains uncertain as Senate Majority Leader John Sampson said he will not decide for at least a week whether to push for the expulsion or censure of the Queens senator.

A Senate committee made a recommendation that Monserrate be expelled or censured.

Senate Minority Leader Dean Skelos said a decision is overdue and the full State Senate should take a vote.

"A special select committee was established by Senator Sampson. They made a recommendation after intensive review of the case that the full Senate either act on either expulsion or censure, and that vote should come up now," said Skelos.

In October, Monserrate was convicted of misdemeanor assault for dragging his girlfriend through his apartment building lobby, but he was acquitted of felony assault for slashing her across the face with a piece of broken glass. He was sentenced to three years probation. If he had been convicted of a felony, he would have automatically lost his seat.

Monserrate has vowed to file a lawsuit to stop any attempts to remove him from office.
