Candidates are waiting for final numbers to come in for the race for the 55th State Senate district.

Democratic candidate Ted O'Brien hopes to have the chance to advocate for middle class families.

"Well, you know, I was born in this community, I have lived here my whole life. I met my wife here, I raised my kids here, I love this community. I really am passionate about advocating for our community, which I think is something that may be missing in Albany. I can't wait to get down there and advocate for the community I love," O'Brien said.

The race for the 55th State Senate seat between Democrat Ted O'Brien and Republican Sean Hanna has been closely watched here at home. The seat was vacated by Jim Alesi, a Republican who held the seat since 1996, and then announced he was stepping down earlier this year.

The candidates in this race cast their ballots early Tuesday morning. Ted O'Brien, the minority leader of the Monroe County Legislature, showed up at his polling site at the Laurelton Fire Hall in Irondequoit.

Sean Hanna, who is an Assemblyman in the 130th District, voted in Mendon.

Both men were planning to spend the day on the campaign trail, getting the vote out and making sure people head to the polls.

The balance of power in the Senate could hinge on the outcome of this race as well as several others.
