By: YNN Staff

The local Republicans are just across East Main Street at the Radisson Hotel. That's where we find YNN's Cristina Domingues who is taking a look at one of the most hotly contested races in the Rochester region.

It is one of the biggest races voters in our area went to the polls for. Republican Maggie Brooks is challenging longtime Democratic incumbent Louise Slaughter.

Slaughter has been in Congress for 26 years, and this election she faced a serious challenger in Brooks. Both women are well-known but have spent millions in campaign ads through this race. They were both criticized for a negative tone to many of those.

Several polls shows Slaughter in the lead, but neither candidate is banking on those numbers.

"Well I never count the votes until after nine o'clock, so we'll see how it goes," Slaughter said. "Let me tell you, in 1986 when I first ran for Congress, 1,000 people took election day off to get the word out. We don't have that many people taking a day off, but we've had thousands of people volunteering for over two months."

"Everybody has a differnet method of polling people, it's not scientific, but I feel a lot of momemtum and the wind is our back and I've had a lot of support within this community financially and otherwise and they're ready for a change and I can be the most effective agent for change in this congressional district going forward," said Brooks.
