Iroquois Nationals Still Must Foot Travel Bill
The United States beat Canada for its ninth world lacrosse title. One team the U.S. didn't have to worry about was the Iroquois Nationals, who ranked fourth in the world but didn't make the tournament because of passport issues.
The team's executive director says he's proud of how his players maintained their identity and dignity by taking a stand after British officials refused entry to the team last week, which failed to recognize their Iroquois Confederacy issued passports.
The Nationals know they had a chance to challenge the U.S. and Canada for the world crown. Peter Jemison of the Ganondagan State Historic Site said there was also a financial impact.
"The team lost approximately $63,000 in airline tickets alone, and then they lost the hotel rooms, the expense of those, and they’re still not even sure if they're going to be charged for the rooms in England," said Jemison.
He says the total bill will likely come to around $100,000 for a tournament that the team was never able to compete in.
