Penfield Hosts Annual Volleyball Tourney
Lots of volleyball this weekend at the 30th Annual Penfield Girls Volleyball Tournament. The annual Labor Day weekend event includes 44 teams from across the state and Canada.
Among them was a team that's gone through a lot of changes. The Aquinas varsity team is coached by Mike Harnden. He was coach at the former Nazareth Academy for 17 years. When that school closed in May, he landed the job at Aquinas and brought Nazareth players with him. He says the members of two teams are playing as one.
"We had six girls that came over that played varsity for Naz The Aquinas girls have been wonderful in terms of welcoming, the staff has been wonderful, too, and it's nice to see how well they've meshed and how they worked very hard at becoming a team instead of two different teams," said Mike Harnden, Aquinas varsity coach.
About 500 players are participating in the tournament Saturday, which is the official kick off to the girl's volleyball season.
