Suhr Has Sights on Olympic Gold

By: Don Heins

Four years ago, Jenn Stuczynski was prepping for the biggest year of her life. She was engaged to her coach, Rick Suhr, she was ranked second in the World in the women's pole vault and the Olympics in Beijing were looming just seven months away. Much has changed for the Fredonia native and Roberts Wesleyan grad.

Jenn and Rick Suhr are gearing up for an Olympic year for the second time in their partnership. Now married, coach and athlete have the experience of 2008 to fall back on heading into this indoor season.

"There was a lot that I didn't know about in Beijing that happened that I wasn't prepared for, so I'm prepared for it now. There could be more things that happen in London that I don't know of, so you start at Olympic trials and then you qualify and when that comes around, that's what we're going to worry about," Jenn said.

On New Year's Day, the Track & Field News released its World Rankings, which carry through the entire year regardless of performance. Suhr, having beaten the event's preeminent vaulter, Yelena Isenbaeva of Russia twice in 2011, earned the number one ranking.

"I actually started crying. We had company over and I didn't know if I should, or what I wanted to do and I was trying to be polite," said Jenn.

"It's kind of made this life journey worthwhile for both Jenn and myself in track and field. It's the apex, it's the pinnacle of what we do, to be ranked number one in the world," said Rick.

In an Olympic year, that prestigous mark will allow her to approach the major meets differently and approach her main competition differently.

"She, in my opinion, still the most dominate athlete in any sport at what she does. She will be the number one person to beat. I just think we've closed that gap quite a bit now," Rick said.

With the indoor season ready to start, the Suhrs will spend the indoor season and the pre-Olympic Trials portion of their outdoor season, working on improving their chances to win Olympic gold.

"It's probabaly the only type of season where you can have the crowd so close to you and hopefully enjoy it because there's not a lot riding on it. We try to have fun indoor but we never really hold back much. If we're capable of jumping high, we'll jump high but a lot of it is experimental," Jenn said.

"It's a developmental season and I think that's what we're looking to try and do. Part of what we want to do is to find out where are our flaws, what do we have to do to fix them so it's a little bit of a work in progress for indoor," said Rick.

Olympic trials for Track & Field are at the end of June in Eugene, Oregon. The London Olympics pole vaulting is August 4th and 6th.
