RIT men's hockey is rising to the top of the Atlantic Hockey Association standings again.
With a sweep of Mercyhurst this weekend, the Tigers would be on top of the league despite playing on the road since December 10th.
A big reason is goalie Shane Madolora. The senior leads the nation with six shutouts this season, and he is ranked top five in goals against and save percentage, leading the Tigers to be the third ranked defensive team in the nation.
His game has improved steadily since an NCAA suspension in October due to academic transfer papers that weren't filled properly.
"I had a little bit of chip on my shoulder coming back off the five games and got off to a hot start, and then settled down and then got a break at Christmas, and then sort of started to heat back up after break so, it was just nice to get the week off, recharge the batteries and get ready for the rest of the year,” Madolora said.
"He's always been a diligent, hard-working, competitive person so, I think he's worked very hard. Sometimes you wonder at Christmas break how are goalies in particular going to come back and return. I think they've all come back very strong so, we feel very comfortable there and it makes us breathe a little easier,” said head coach Wayne Wilson.
