Byrd open to staying in Buffalo

By: Andy Young

Byrd open to staying in Buffalo
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — After a report came out Friday that the Bills have opened negotiations on a contract extension for Jairus Byrd, the free safety said he's open to staying with the team.

"Re-signing with Buffalo, I have no problems," said Byrd after Friday's practice. "I love the fans here."

"We just have to win. That's the biggest thing, is just winning. I want to be somewhere where I'm wanted too. I want them to want me here. And if that's the case, like I said, I have no problems with Buffalo, Coach Gailey, everybody here is great."

ESPN's AFC East blogger James Walker reported the two sides have begun preliminary negotiations, and no deal is imminent.

"Sure, yeah if everything works out I have no problems with Buffalo," said Byrd. "But I know around this time it's about business, so I understand that too."

Byrd said he had not spoken to his agent about any negotiations. Set to become a free agent in the offseason, the 26-year-old has been one of the club's best performers, 17 interceptions since being drafted in the 2nd round in 2009.

"I don't really talk to my agent too much, honestly," said Byrd. "We communicate. He just kind of lets me focus so I don't really know (about contract negotiations). I let him handle that."

Byrd leads the team with four interceptions this year, and is third on the team with 56 tackles.
