This is a great time of year to head south to grab some early fun in the sun. Key West is about as far south as you can get and still stay in the U.S. A.!
My first trip to Key West left me with a very good impression of this last island in the Florida Keys. Relaxed, friendly and just small enough to get around on foot or bike.
I have never seen so many good restaurants! According to the locals, there are more than 300 restaurants in Key West, many of which offer fine dining at moderate prices.
Duval Street has the nightlife scene down pat. Block after block of bars, nightclubs, galleries, souvenir shops and restaurants. Follow it to the end and you'll find yourself close to where the cruise ships come in and the throngs gather for the famous sunset at Mallory Square.
The Ernest Hemingway Home is a big attraction with daily tours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day of the year. Hemingway Home
The Harry S. Truman Little White House is a must-see at 111 Front Street. trumanlittlewhitehouse.com
There are many hotels to choose from in Key West, some of which are familiar chain names. In my opinion, staying at a typical Key West accommodation is the way to get the true flavor of the island. One may want to consider The Marquesa Hotel. A small, quiet hotel in the middle of the historic district providing some of the best service in town. Two pools set amongst lush foliage complete the picture for a very relaxing stay.
Room choices vary from standard to junior suites with prices ranging from $220 to $520 per night. Rates drop in May and again in June.
