The community is mourning the loss of one of Rochester's greatest all-around high school athletes.
Trent Jackson died suddenly at Strong Memorial Hospital Sunday. He was 65.
Jackson excelled in football, basketball and track at Franklin High School.
He was an Olympian in Tokyo in 1964 and also played for two NFL teams.
"I think the lessons that he learned from all of his experiences both at the high school level, college level sucesses, Olympian successes and also in life, I think carried over to this coaching his kids," said Neil Zwierlein, physical education director for the Rochester City School District.
Trent Jackson returned to his alma mater. He coached basketball at Franklin for more than 20 years, retiring in 2001.
"I remember my freshman year, first basketball practice at Franklin, he cussed me out. I ran home, caught the bus and when I got home, he was there, and it showed me that he cared more about me as a person, than basketball," said Terry Brinkley, who played for Jackson in the early 1980s.
Trent faced health problems in 1998 when he underwent bypass surgery.
He remained active and kept in contact with many of his former players.
"His area of strength was to make sure kids learn and get the best education they could and don't just look at it as given a scholarship to college to play ball, but you can go and be something better than just a ballplayer," said Jackson's brother-in-law, Wayne Kittelberger.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
