The Churchville-Chili School District said Thursday that one of its students tested positive for the H1N1, or swine flu, virus.

Superintendent Pamela Kissel says the child has fully recovered from the virus and has returned to school.

The child is a student at Fairbanks Road Elementary and has siblings at the middle school and Ninth Grade Academy.

Kissel says there is no need for further preventative measures because the child is well and is no longer contagious.

Monroe County Health Director, Dr. Andrew Doniger says it takes about a week to confirm a case of H1N1 flu once a doctor tests for it.

“It doesn't work like it works for some other diseases where the doctor suspects a particular disease and they can order the tests in their office and then call the health department. Unfortunately, the system is less efficient and we don't have all the testing resources we'd like to have. So this family did everything right. The physician did everything right. The school district did everything right. Unfortunately, we don't have circumstances right now where we can quickly identify these cases," Dr. Doniger said.

Doniger said at this point, there is no way to stop the spread of H1N1, only to slow it and attempt to protect the community's most vulnerable.

He's urging all people with flu-like symptoms, including a high fever and respiratory symptoms, to call their physician and stay home from work or school for seven days.
