As we hit the home stretch of the campaign season, political sparring is in full swing. One candidate has already been called out for what is believed to be false statements in a campaign flyer.
With Election Day just a month away, political newcomer Mike Condello is going door to door to meet potential constituents. Condello is running on the Democratic ticket for Monroe County Legislature in the 13th district of Henrietta.
Republicans are questioning a recent flyer Condello mailed to residents claiming to be a lifelong resident of Henrietta. Truth is, he owned a home and lived in the town of Gates for three years.
"One of the most basic things in elective office is to have some trust and to try and convey that to the voters. And if you can't trust a basic thing of where he lives, where he spent the last few years of his life, how can you trust beyond that?" asked Monroe County GOP Chairman Bill Reilich.
Condello insists he wasn’t being deceptive.
"I you want to look in the dictionary, lifelong means lasting or continuing through all or most of ones life,” he said. “When it comes right down to it I'm a lifelong resident, Henrietta is my home and this is where I'm going to stay and raise my kids and live my life."
Condello says if he could go back and re-phrase the information in his recent mailer he wouldn't change a thing, and will continue to refer to himself as a lifelong Henrietta resident. Republicans believe that is misleading to voters. Reilich says voters need to do their homework to be sure candidates are being upfront.
"I think you need to research all the facts, just don't take it for granted because it's printed on a piece of paper,” Reilich said. “I guess even the simplest facts can be misleading and in this case they were certainly more than misleading it was an out and out untruth."
Condello says he's lived in Henrietta 90-percent of his life and lives there now. He believes the republicans are calling him out to distract voters from what's really important.
"What really saddens though is that there are people deliberately trying to distract voters from the real issues of this campaign: too few jobs, too much corruption and scandal in Monroe County. This is what this campaign is about, changing those things," Condello said.
Calls placed to Republican candidate John Howland for his reaction to the Condello mailing went unreturned.
