As the home heating season gets underway, the federal government has ways to make your place more comfortable and help save you money at the same time.

Upgrades to make your home more energy-efficient, including some stoves and fireplace inserts, can qualify for a 30 percent tax credit, up to $1,500.

Eligible products include biomass stoves that burn wood, sawdust pellets, or corn at 75 percent efficiency.

"When burning the fuel, it has to give at least 75 percent of energy back as heat," said Fireplace Fashions manager Jim Rehbach. "Most of our appliances are greater than 75 percent efficient."

Other energy-efficient improvements that can qualify for tax credits include windows and doors, insulation, HVAC units, and water heaters.
