We are learning more about the two police officers who were shot in the line of duty Tuesday.

Officer Luca Martini was shot in the arm, left hand and in the chest. Police say luckily that bullet was stopped by his bulletproof vest.

Martini joined the force in 2006 and is described by his peers as an exemplary officer.

Officer Daniel Brochu was hit by a bullet in the lower leg. Brochu is a Marine Corps veteran and a nine-year member of the Rochester Police force. Brochu is also a recruit class counselor who trains new officers.

Over the years, Brochu has received several honors, including departmental lifesaving awards. The most recent came in April of 2008 for pulling an unconscious driver from his burning car after an overnight car crash.

"Both these guys went in there and did what was expected of them. And the investigation shows when shots begin to ring out, they responded according to their training. And the sheer fact that they were able to survive and encounter, a point blank encounter with a man with a gun is indicative of their professional and their training experience. They're good cops. They're great cops," said Deputy Chief George Markert, Rochester Police Department.

Markert said both officers love their job and are eager to get back to work, but he says healing from an incident like this is a long and difficult process, both physically and mentally.
