Two wounded Rochester police officers received an unexpected visitor Thursday. New York Governor David Paterson added a trip to Rochester to his public schedule.

Officers Daniel Brochu and Luca Martini were shot while responding to a home invasion call Tuesday night. Both are recovering at Strong Memorial Hospital.

The governor said he went to Strong Hospital to personally shake their hands.

“They are really the symbols of law enforcement,” said Paterson. “People who are special who think about others before themselves who put their lives on the line.”

Doctors said both wounded officers should be out of the hospital in a week, if not less.

One person who did not welcome the governor with open arms is the president of the Rochester Police Union.

Mike Mazzeo said while he appreciates the governor's concern for the injured officers, he wishes the governor would give officers more support in the budget.

"In light of what we've seen in Rochester, when three officers in this past year are shot, we need more support – other than just coming here for a photo shoot. If money's the factor, then perhaps he should stay in Albany and get the job done," Mazzeo said.
