Some Local Catholic Schools May Return to Parish-Run Model
The Rochester Catholic Diocese said it is in talks with some of its schools in Monroe County about returning to the parish-run school operational model that is in place outside of the county.
In a statement issued to YNN Rochester Wednesday morning, the diocese said it is in discussions with some schools and that, if it does happen, it would be seamless for parents and students. The parish would run the school; the diocese would help with curriculum and staffing.
Two years ago this week on January 18, 2008, Bishop Matthew Clark announced the diocese would close 13 Catholic schools at the end of the 2007-2008 school year.
Several of those schools presented plans to operate their schools independently to the leadership of the diocese.
The diocese clarified its plan with a follow-up statement:
"Monroe County Catholic School officials have no plans to reopen any of the 13 schools that were closed as part of the restructuring in 2008. The current study exploring reversion of our existing schools to a parish-run model currently involves several, but not all, existing sites."
The diocese said it would not identify or comment further on specific schools it is dialoguing with until parents at those schools are informed.
