A fast-moving fire ripped through a building on Lake Avenue Thursday afternoon.

The fire destroyed two business and two apartments inside the building. Fire officials said the fire started in the laundromat area in the front portion business section of the building.

Despite the heavy damage, fire officials said it does not appear to be suspicious.

Those working inside Lake Ave. Coin-Op Laundry said they started smelling smoke and originally thought it was coming from one of the machines.

Valerie Stribling then noticed smoke coming from the ceiling, which is when she got the four customers inside the building out and called 911.

"I didn't initially panic maybe because I didn't realize it was that bad or because my body wouldn't let me. Then I didn't panic until I got outside and saw how bad it was," said Stribling.

Three adults and two kids were living in the two apartments connected to the building. One of them said the flames spread in minutes.

"There was a real heavy concentration of heavy smoke coming through the floor. It was almost blinding up there. I got a few possessions and then we cleared out and I left the door open," said Roy Grady, who lived upstairs.

"Investigators feel pretty confident that it's not suspicious at this time, but the investigation will continue and it will go a little more in-depth. As soon as we can get the guys in there to take a good look at it," said Sam Mitrano, executive deputy fire chief.

The building is a total loss. No one was injured in the blaze; all the residents in the upstairs and downstairs apartments behind the building escaped safely.

The Red Cross is assisting those displaced by the fire.
