Firefighters in Orleans County endured bitter cold temperatures and falling snow Friday morning, to battle a house fire in the town of Murray.

Chief Peter Dunn of the Fancher, Hulberton and Murray Fire Department said they were called out to the house on Center Rd. just before 4am.

Dunn said because of the extreme weather, 75-100 firefighters from Orleans and Monroe counties were circulated in and out of the scene. Crews also had to truck water to the site.

Dunn said this was a vacant house, recently seized by the government.
He is calling the fire suspicious, another in a string of suspicious fires in the area.

"We average three fires a year. I've been to more than 20 in the last year," said Dunn.

"Since last June, we've had a pre-plan go into effect. The chief officers go around our district to make sure we know what houses are vacant. If fire alarms come from those residences, we make a quick assessment, 'Is there a life threat that we have to worry about?' Then we think about property conservation.

We don't want anybody to get hurt. Houses can be rebuilt. I can't replace firemen."

Dunn says investigators are looking into those fires.

The house on Center Rd. was owned by Juliet Anderson, who forfeited the home to the government after pleading guilty to money laundering charges.
Federal investigators said Lewis used profits from a cocaine distribution ring run by her grandson to build the nearly half million dollar home.

Kevin Lamont Anderson and co-defendent Willie Grimes each face ten years in federal prison and a $4 million fine when sentenced Tuesday.

Juliet Anderson, a former Rochester anti-violence activist, was sentenced to two years probation for her money laundering conviction.
