A new law takes effect next week aimed at protecting consumers.

Signed into law by the president, the Credit Cardholders' Bill of Rights will ban certain unfair and deceptive fees and rate increases.

Representatives from the Empire Justice Center in Rochester and Congressman Dan Maffei discussed why consumers need to be protected.

"We're not trying to take away anybody's ability to make decisions, but we want to make sure they know what they're getting. That if an introductory rate is an introduction they know exactly how much the rate's going to be; that they know exactly when that new rate is going to kick in; that they understand exactly what they're getting with these credit cards. Exactly what services they're signing up for and what they're not signing up for," Maffei said.

The bill of rights takes effect on Monday.
