Honeoye Falls-Lima High School has staff available to help students cope with the loss of classmate Peter Cannon, 18, who died Saturday after a two-car crash.

Sheriff's deputies said Cannon was driving southbound on County Road 37 in the town of Richmond Friday when he lost control of his vehicle in a snowdrift.

Cannon's minivan crossed the center line, where it was struck by a Honda SUV. The driver of that car, Charles Gray III, 67, of Springwater, was transported to Strong Hospital. A passenger in Gray's SUV, Cynthia Gray, 67, was transported to Strong Hospital by Mercy Flight.

Sheriff's deputies said the Grays' injuries were considered non-life-threatening.

Investigators said all parties were wearing seatbelts. Route 37 remained closed for several hours while authorities investigated.

Honeoye Falls community members said Cannon was an accomplished athlete.

Cannon was a senior in the Honeoye Falls-Lima Central School District.

Statement by HF-L school superintendent:

"Our deepest sympathy is with the family and friends of Peter Cannon in this time of sadness. His life was filled with service, achievement and energy. He leaves a lasting memory for many."

As news spreads of Peter Cannon's death, family and friends gathered to remember the person who always brought a smile to their face.

Cannon’s Nordic Ski coach, Bernie Gardner, said Cannon was a hard worker who everyone knew and loved.

"He was just a great boy," he said. “I'm still just in disbelief."

Coach Gardner of Honeoye Falls-Lima High School spent his evening getting his team's skis ready for the Section V Nordic Skiing Championships this Tuesday and Wednesday. But there was one skier in particular who was on his mind.

"This was big for Peter. This is one of the benchmarks of his year,” said Gardner. “This was something he had really been looking forward to and he was one of our really key guys."

Gardner said Cannon was the one always playing practical jokes, yet, at the same time, had a heart of gold. Gardner says his team is still coming to grips with the tragedy.

"They were the life to Peter and Peter was the life to them,” he added. “So it's tough. It's tough for them."

Coach Bernie expects a feeling of emptiness when school resumes Monday, as well as during the championship.

"Right at this moment, sports and athletics seem trivial, but at the same time you recognize how big of a part it meant to Peter and so we're going to do what we can do," he added.

Coach Bernie said the team will be skiing and competing in Cannon’s honor at the Nordic Skiing Championships. He said they are remembering him as a great guy with a great sense of humor.

In a statement released Sunday morning by the Honeoye-Falls Lima School District, Superintendent Michelle Kavanaugh said school leaders will offer support to families and students dealing with the loss of Cannon. The district said it will offer transportation from the high school to his funeral services, which are planned for Friday.
