Fairport native Karen Altergott lives in Hawaii. She said family and friends called her before she even knew about the tsunami warnings.
"We've been following the Hilo Bay Front webcam, and it's actually really impressive. We've seen Hilo Bay Front. We've walked the shore many times and stayed at the hotels. It's quite placid most of the time. So, to watch the water recede almost as if you saw a raging river, it was quite impressive even on TV. Apparently, over in Hilo, it's kind of a big party up on the cliff. People are watching it from a safe distance."
Altergott said the island missed the predicted waves, and that the warning was a great opportunity to make sure her family's emergency plan was ready and up-to-date.
