It was a night of glitz and glamor as Hollywood celebrated the movies at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards in Los Angeles. But it's not just a party for Hollywood's elite, as some in our area celebrated Oscar's big night.

That included a red carpet affair in Penfield Sunday night.

"It started out because my husband wasn't interested," said Kelly Lindenmayer, who cohosted an Oscar party. "It started out as a girlfriend thing."

They aren't up for an Academy Award, but the party gave these friends a chance to experience the magic of the big screen on the small screen.

"We've seen 18 movies this season to be ready for the party," said Lindenmayer.

At the Eastman House, it's a similar story. It may be on a higher level than most neighborhood Oscar parties, but that's to be expected from one of the most influential players in movie history.

"Tonight's our 14th annual Academy Awards party," said Eliza Kozlowski, director of communications and visitor engagement for the Eastman House.

George Eastman is known as the father of motion picture film. Eight of the ten films up for best picture were shot on Kodak film. It's why people celebrate cinematography with food, live music, and the Academy Awards ceremony on the big screen of the Dryden Theatre.

"He and Thomas Edison worked together and it's very well known," said Kozlowski. "There is a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The green room at the Kodak Theatre, where the Oscars are being held tonight, is called the George Eastman room."

Sunday night's festivities at the Eastman House weren't all about Hollywood's big night. There were various items up for auction, all to raise money for the museum's film preservation archive, the third largest in the country.

"It's to help support the museum's efforts, in particular our film preservation efforts," said Kozlowski. "We're a leader in motion picture preservation and we're thrilled this party helps support that.

So whether you ended up taking home a hockey stick signed by Ryan Miller of the Buffalo Sabres or had the chance to hold the man of gold for a memorable moment, Oscar night is that once a year gathering many look forward to, all to find out who was named the best of the best of 2009.
