Conversation Continues Over Mayoral Control of City Schools
Another conversation took place Monday night about mayoral control of the Rochester City School District.
The discussion was led in part by RCSD School Board Member Van White and leaders of Rochester's Baobab Cultural Center. It comes one night before the city school district will hold a public hearing on the issue.
"At the end of the day, it is not whether, it is not whether it is pro or con, it is whether there is a clear vision for education in the community. A clear purpose for why kids need to perform. A clear vision for what is the responsibility for the stakeholders and their careers and education," said Moka Lantum, Baobab Cultural Center founder.
The Rochester City School Board of Education will host a public hearing on mayoral control at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at district offices on West Broad Street. You are encouraged to sign up in advance by calling (585) 262-8525 if you're interested in speaking.
Survey Wants Feedback on Mayoral Control of RCSD
A new survey going out to Rochester residents this week wants to know what people think about mayoral control of the Rochester City School District.
The Center for Governmental Research and the local opinion research firm Metrix Matrix are mailing out the surveys to 2,100 hundred residents Monday.
Leaders say the idea presented by Rochester Mayor Bob Duffy has generated so much debate on both sides of the issue, they say it's important to know what people really think about it.
"Basically we're looking to see where people stand,” says Jim Antonevich, of Metrix Matrix. “Number one, do you have an opinion and if you do have an opinion where do you fall in the scale? Then what types of things are important to people, is it the quality of teachers? Is it the safety of schools? Is it neighborhood schools? All those types of things that should be part of the final decision, whoever ends up with accountability for the schools."
The survey has to be returned by March 17. Poll takers say they will tabulate all the information and release the results publicly March 30.
