For more than a decade the Volunteers of America has offered homeless men a place to stay and an array of services to help them get back on their feet at a building on State Street.
Now that building is getting a much needed face lift. In honor of National VOA Founders Week, the agency announced it has received a $3 million state grant through the Homeless Housing Assistance Program.
The project will add 15 new apartments to the 30-existing units, renovate the facade, add offices, a training space, new roof and heating and sprinkler system.
"The building was given to us long ago for a dollar, and it was in pretty tough shape," said VOA President and CEO Dianne Newhouse. "So while while we're trying to help our gentlemen become self sufficient, we also want to respect their dignity and honestly, this is a place that could use a lot of help!."
The project is expected to create more than 100 jobs. It should be completed by the end of the year.
