Lawn Care and Landscaping at a Low Cost
It's the middle of March and spring is in the air at Gardenscape 2010.

Jennifer Goddard just bought a lake house. She's at Gardenscape to get a jump-start on a new landscaping design.

"I am here to get some ideas for landscaping and what type of trees [I want]. I would like to put in a little Japanese garden and what would grow on the east side of a windy lake."

Like many, Goddard said she and her husband want to achieve that dream design within a budget.

"There will be a budget and it's not going to be a very big area because our place is not that big, but there's a budget attached to it," said Goddard.

Don Wetzel is the owner of Twin Oaks Lawn and Landscaping. He said there are ways to make over your yard without breaking the bank.

"As far as instant impact, you can really do a lot with annuals and add a lot of color and interests. Hedging the beds, mulching, trimming that would really kind of make an old landscape fresh and new. Those are probably the easiest, least expensive ways to do something," said Wetzel.

He added if you're looking at doing a big project, start small.

"When you get an estimate from the landscaper, get an a la carte estimate. Instead of doing a $20,000 project, now maybe you can do it in four or three, $4,000 increments,” Wetzel said.

There's also a difference between cutting costs and being cheap. Wetzel says taking shortcuts on major projects could cost more in the long run.

"Anyone can make it look great the first year it's done. What separates landscapers is how it looks when it's 5 to 10 years out and how things hold up for you," he added.

While many are at Gardenscape admiring the different designs, Gardenscape co-founder Glenn Schneider says now is the time to buy.

"The great thing about what's going on right now is there a lot of competition. Competition drives the prices down and there's never been a better time to buy landscaping,” said Schneider.

Not to mention spring will soon be in full bloom.
