An equipment malfunction knocked out power to thousands of Rochester Gas & Electric customers in southern Monroe County Sunday afternoon.

An RG&E spokesman said a malfunction at a substation on Mendon Center Road mid-afternoon cut power to about 3,700 customers in Pittsford, Henrietta and Mendon.

About half of those customers were restored by late afternoon.

An RG&E spokesman said power was restored to everyone by early Sunday evening.
