RIT Campus Alert System Activated
The Rochester Institute of Technology sent out a campus alert after a report of a possible armed individual on campus.
RIT released a statement on its web site saying it sent out the message to the campus community just after 1 a.m. Wednesday.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department said a person from out of state called 911 to say they had a friend who was a student at RIT and was having suicidal thoughts.
The friend then called the student back and told him the police were looking for him. The student then called police, told them he was not armed and surrendered without incident.
"The purpose of RIT alert is really to get immediate response out to individuals so they can take the necessary precautions to protect their own safety," said Paul Stella, RIT university news director.
"When I read the full message I was taken by surprise because last year I experienced a similar thing at my sister's campus. So I knew it was serious and I needed to act on," said RIT student Jonathan Foster.
Sheriff’s deputies said another person was taken into police custody for interfering with the police investigation.
