A dining hall worker at St. John Fisher College, who was struck by a car while walking to work Wednesday morning, has died.

The school sent a statement announcing her death and expressing thoughts and prayers for Michelle Gartland's family and co-workers.

Gartland was hit around 6:30 Wednesday morning on Fairport Road in front of the entrance to Murphy Residence Hall.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Department said the 38-year-old Gartland was struck by an eastbound vehicle. Authorities said the motorist tried to swerve out of the way.

Counseling services are available for students and staff in Fisher's Wellness Center and Campus Ministry.
