Kristin Elliott loves her cocker spaniel, Ally. But like many dog owners, the love can fall short when it comes time to pick up their, well, poop.
"There's a lot of pet owners that just can't get passed the discomfort of picking up," said Elliott. "This is a solution that's very green."
The solution she's referring to is creative, convenient, and for the greener good. It's called the Doodie Pack.
"If he goes to the bathroom while we are out, he can carry it, so I don't have to," said dog owner Regina Helfer.
Elliott hopes her creative creation will help eliminate groundwater waste and cut down on contamination by encouraging owners to pick up the poop, since the dog is now part of doodie duty. The pack straps around the dog and has pockets to hold his or her waste during walks, which means the dog owner doesn’t have to.
“It isn't because there are ordinances in place because they want to be lawmakers," said Elliott. "But there's an issue. There's an environmental problem. Twenty percent of groundwater contamination comes from pet waste."
The packs come in different colors and sizes. Elliott came up with the concept nearly two years ago and has already received an overwhelming response from dog owners across the country.
"She explained to me the purpose and I thought, oh, what a neat idea," said Helfer.
For Elliott, it was a small idea that she hopes will make a big impact.
"Putting the pack together and advocating that we are environmentally aware has helped as a homeowner, and as a mom," she said. "I'm just trying to pass that on to the community."
