Maplewood YMCA Breaks Ground on Renovations

Maplewood YMCA Breaks Ground on Renovations
It was a groundbreaking day at the Maplewood YMCA Monday.

YMCA officials and members broke ground on a $5 million expansion and renovation project.

Officials said that renovations include turning the current gymnasium into a fitness center and building a new gym to replace it. The YMCA currently offers child care, after-school activities, summer camps, and health and fitness programs.

Officials said that the renovations will not only improve those services, but also restore part of Rochester’s history.

"We’re here in the city and we're making a major statement to stay in the city and be a critical part of service delivery. Second, we're saving the 1916 building. It's a historic structure and it has some good value and good use to it. We're not tearing it all down. We're adding to it and we're certainly changing it, but in the end, there will still be that historic part," said George Romell.

The facility is expected to reopen in late January of 2011.
