Rochester firefighters believe the fire in a vacant building was intentionally set. Firefighters got the call just before 6 p.m. Wednesday to the old American Laundry Factory on Sherer Street.
Three alarms were called to the scene. It took firefighters about a couple of hours to put the fire completely out and they are ruling the fire as suspicious.
Many who work in the industrial park on Sherer Street said this isn't the first time a this vacant factory has caught fire.
The landlord of several nearby buildings, John Affronti, didn't want to speak on camera, but said he has been asking the city to tear down the building for years because of that reason.
Firefighters said the building used to be the old American Laundry building, which has been out of business for years, but fire officials said they are still investigating who owns the property.
Lt. Willie Jackson with the Rochester Fire Department said the building was left open so there is easy access for anyone to trespass and possibly start a fire.
"We believe there's been a couple of fires here before and there's no utilities in the building. There's nothing that could cause the fire so we believe it's of suspicious nature," Lt. Jackson said.
Firefighters said they had to fight the fire from the outside of the building and there were no injuries reported.
"Everybody seems to be in good condition. It's going relatively well," Lt. Jackson added.
The owner of Affonti Properties claims the city owns the vacant factory. Our messages left with city officials to respond were not yet returned.
