Saturday's high winds kept emergency and utility crews busy throughout the area. As of Sunday night, less than 1,000 of RG&E and NYSEG customers were still without power.

From Rochester to Penfield to Scottsville and Hilton, wind gusts as high as 54 mph blew through the area taking down trees and power lines with them.

"In this type of weather, you're better of staying home," said Fire Chief Bob Emerson, Scottsville.

David Pedraza came home from the store just in time to see a tree come down.

"Five minutes earlier, my brother-in-law and my niece were parked right there. So, it's a good thing they left at the time they did."

While some houses escaped damage, others were not so lucky.

A tree in Irondequoit was uprooted after more than 50 years in the ground, marking the end of an era for one family.

"Very sad. My mother was crying today," said Oksana Gordon, Irondequoit. "I want to cry, too, when I look at it. We're all in shock."

No matter where the debris fell, cleanup crews in the town of Irondequoit were there to pick up the pieces.

David Pedraza said he will miss his tree. With his house spared, he admits it's a little easier to look on the bright side.

"We were planning on cutting it down this summer. Thanks to Mother Nature, we don't have to do it now," he said. "Now, I have more grass to cut."
