Former NBA player and humanitarian Manute Bol died over the weekend. The native of Sudan visited Rochester after his career.

During his last trip, just last fall, he really left his mark.

Josiah Bertou attended that presentation at the University of Rochester with his dad, Shane. Bol discussed efforts to raise money to build schools in his native Sudan.

Josiah, then 6 years old, was so moved that he started a web site called "Josiah and Friends," which, to date, has collected more than $2,500 in donations.

“I really want to do more to build schools in Sudan, because those kids need an education,” said Josiah. “They didn't have any schools and they just sit under a tree.”

Josiah said his plan now is to help raise enough money to fulfill Bol's plan to build 41 schools in Sudan.

Manute Bol was 47 years old.
