A local group says it’s fed up with BP Oil Company and off-shore oil drilling. Dozens met up at Ontario Beach Park to speak out against it.

"‘Hands Across the Sand" is an effort that's sweeping the nation. A handful of environmental organizations are taking part in it.

"I'm representing the environment because I'm part of it. There's no separating the two," said John Ferrari, Penfield.

Those gathered spoke out against off-shore drilling and championed clean and renewable energy.

"We have to do something collectively as a nation. We need to begin to invest in green jobs. We need to move away from oil. We need to make a commitment now," said Dawn Revette, Rochester.

The oil spill has now been going on for the past three months. For those holding hands and reflecting, it's hard to watch.

"Honestly I have to avoid looking at the pictures because it's disturbing to me. But we have to look at our reality,” said Revette. "I hope seeing these images will help wake us up."

More than 60 people gathered locally to join hands in the sand, but this is an effort that's going on around the world.

"I understand there is one in Greenland, all 50 states that are represented, Puerto Rico and just 32 other countries," said Vicki Ryder, organizer. "People are coming together to say no more. We are not going to allow these big corporations to suck the fossil fuel out of our earth at the detriment of not just the humans who inhabit the earth, but the birds or species. It's enough."

It's a message this group wants to send beyond the still waters, before it's too late to clean up mankind's mistake.

"We have nobody to blame but ourselves if we just sit there and watch this news program and then do nothing," said Ryder.
