In Ontario County Sunday, the city of Geneva was flexing its muscle. The 7th Annual Musselman Triathlon was the focus of a weekend of competitions.
Geneva in July is like a little slice of heaven and was the perfect backdrop for the event.
"It's a very welcoming community. Geneva is very hospitable. The volunteers are very friendly,” said Jeff Henderson, race director.
The Cox family represents a portion of that hospitality. They have been volunteering for the past five years.
"It's always a family affair for us. We started out with all of our family doing it. Now one of our kids is off, but it's always a family thing," said Beryel Cox, event volunteer.
Athletes come from all over to run, bike and swim a total of 70.3 miles. George Treffner and his wife traveled quite a ways to cheer on their son.
"He's 10 minutes behind the lead. We are out of West Virginia. We're really happy to be here," said Treffner.
They are just one of the many from 36 different states and several different countries.
"We came from Northern Virginia and it's about 6.5 hours away. We brought about 125 athletes," said Ed Zerkle, head coach of Team Z.
Cheers, burgers, and beer, Coach Zerkle and his team didn't just come to compete, but to tailgate.
"Eight hours of exercise and they are out their burning thousands of calories. They deserve the opportunity to have a cold beer,” said Zerkle.
The event brings thousands into Geneva from all around the world. Business owners said the economic impact is great for the community.
"I think it's been a boost for everybody in the local area here. The wineries, the hotels, it's been wonderful. The people who come in for this race are absolutely wonderful. They've been great for our community," said local restaurant owner Kay Cocola.
"I'm going to guess that it's about a million dollar weekend that comes into the community for Geneva. So, I think it helps the community a lot," said Henderson.
Henderson said this event will go as long as it grows.
"We're planning on doing it for as long as people keep coming," added Henderson.
This winner of this year's event was Chris Martin of Lawrenceville, New Jersey, with a time of 4:18:30.
