Sheriff's Continue Search for Missing Swimmer
The Monroe County Sheriff's Department continued its search for a missing swimmer Saturday.
Searchers used sonar to try and recover the body of a man missing since Wednesday. Deputies said Mehmet Yilmaz, 24, originally from Turkey, is presumed drowned.
Deputies said Yilmaz was swimming 200 yards offshore near Irondequoit Bay Wednesday evening when friends noticed he started to struggle.
Two people were in the boat at the time and tried to throw Yilmaz a flotation device, but could not reach him. They say he never surfaced after that.
"They're crushed, you know. They're not talking. I mean what are they going to say. I mean, they go out to have a good time, and it ends up in a tragedy," said Mehmet Serbetca, a friend.
Deputies said Yilmaz attends CMG School in Trevose, Pennsylvania, and was in town looking at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
The U.S. Coast Guard was aiding with the search until it changed from a rescue to a recover effort Thursday afternoon.
